How does a teacher score coded evidence from the principal's shared observation notes?

Background:

Once a principal has allowed the teacher to score the coded evidence from the observation notes, the teacher will have some additional capabilities in his/her Observation module. This article describes how a teacher scores the principal's shared observation notes.

Please Note:
This step is optional.

Follow these steps:

As with the teacher's previous task of reading the principal's shared observation notes, the teacher will see an orange notification icon next to the Observations link in their dashboard the next time they sign in to eVAL. The teacher should click on the Observations link.

Clicking on the Observations link (above) will take the teacher to the Observations section which is further down the page on their dashboard. There, they should look for all new orange notification icons and their nearby descriptions. In the image below, the second icon indicates that something about a recent observation has been shared. If the teacher wants to view that shared observation activity, s/he should click on the green View button by in that row.

Clicking on the green View button (in the step above) will take the teacher into the Observation module for that observation. On the right end of the tab bar, a black Sharing Status button will be displayed. The teacher can click on that button to learn more about the status of the observation data that has been shared by their evaluating principal.

Clicking on the black Sharing Status button (in the step above) will reveal a drop-down window that shows what has been shared. In the image below:

  1. The teacher can see that the principal has allowed the teacher to score the coded evidence from the observation notes.
  2. The teacher can simply click on the white Close button to return to the Observation module.

If a teacher wishes to score the coded evidence from the principal's shared observation notes:

  1. S/He needs to click on the Align & Score tab.
  2. S/He will notice that the window is divided into two sections. The work space for this tab is on the left side, and the Rubric Navigator is on the right side of the window.

The Rubric Navigator (on the right) organizes and displays the framework's domains/dimensions and their components.

  1. The first domain/dimension will already be expanded to reveal its components.
  2. A numeral under the Collected column in the Rubric Navigator represents the number of coded pieces of evidence from the principal's shared observation notes for that component.
  3. In the image below, the active component is P5, as indicated with a gray box around it. It is active because the teacher clicked on it to see the  observation evidence that the principal coded to this component. Notice that there is a numeral 2 under the Collected column, which means two pieces of evidence were coded to that component by the principal. Each of the two pieces of evidence appears in its own unique gray space on the left.

The teacher should evaluate the quality of each piece of evidence that has been coded to the framework's components. If both pieces of evidence are of the same quality and are worthy of the same score, the teacher should click on both of them and score them at the same time. (Otherwise, the teacher should click on one at a time and score it separately.)

In the image below, the teacher felt that both pieces of evidence shared by the principal was worthy of the same score, so s/he clicked on both of them to score them at the same time.

(Notice that ... at this point ... the Rubric Navigator disappeared temporarily and that it was replaced by a special box called the Evidence Package Creation window.)

The next step is to align the evidence to language in the rubric.

  1. This is done by evaluating the evidence (from above), and then highlighting the language in the rubric that best denotes the quality of the evidence.
  2. If the school's philosphy is to stop there and to NOT score the evidence, that is fine. Notice that the button in the Evidence Package Creation window has turned green, allowing the teacher to complete the evidence package creation process.

However, if the schoo's philosphy is to score the evidence from an observation, the teacher should return to the top of the work space and click on a score for all of the evidence in this package.

When the teacher is ready to create an evidence package that can be shared with his/her evaluating principal, s/he should click on the green Create button in the Evidence Package Creation window.

After you have created a package of evidence, it is no longer classified as Collected Evidence, and it will no longer appear in that section of the page.

  1. Rather, it will appear further down the page, in a new section called Packaged Evidence.
  2. The rubric language that describes all of the evidence in this package will appear at the top.
  3. The beginning letter of the score you selected will appear on the left edge of the rubric statement.
  4. All of the pieces of evidence will appear under the rubric statement.

The teacher should follow the steps listed above for any component in the Rubric Navigator that has a numeral under the Collected column. Once s/he has scored all of the coded evidence that the principal has shared from the observation notes, the teacher should find the green Self-Eval Complete button up on the tab bar, and click on it to share their self-evaluation with their evaluating principal.

A temporary window will appear on the screen, giving the teacher the opportunity to confirm their decision to share their input with their evaluating principal, or to cancel the process.

Once they share their self-evaluation with their principal, the teacher will notice that only one button remains on the tab bar.

Read the next article to learn more about how the principal views the teacher's self-evaluation of the coded evidence.
