How does a principal allow a teacher to score an observation?

Background:

After a principal scribes observation notes and codes some of the notes as evidence, s/he can engage in a dynamic activity with the teacher and allow the teacher to score the coded evidence. Ultimately, this can lead to a comparison of scores between the teacher and the principal, and they can dialog further about what constitutes quality teaching and learning. This article will provide the steps for a principal who wants to allow a teacher to score the coded evidence from the observation.

Follow these steps:

When the principal is in the Observation module for a teacher, s/he will see all of the tabs along the top of the module. The right end of the tab bar displays two buttons:

  1. a Sharing button, which is white if no observation data has been shared with the teacher, or is black if the principal has shared any aspect of the observation with the teacher; and...
  2. the green Send Final Report button.

Click on the Sharing button (whether it is white or black), and the Sharing dialog box will appear. Click on the green Edit button.

In the next window that appears:

  1. Click on the second button down (next to the Allow Teacher Scoring option) and change it so that it is a green Yes.
  2. Then read the red note at the bottom before clicking on the green Save Options button.

When you return to the bar of tabs, the Sharing button will be black to indicate that some aspect of the observation data has been shared with the teacher. (It may have been black at the beginning of this process, if you have shared the observation notes with the teacher already.)

Read the next chapter to learn how the teacher scores the principal's coded evidence from the observation notes.
